NZ - A DAY IN THE CATLINS

looks like rain but out we go…..the Catlins are really quite beautiful even in the rainy conditions…..Nugget Bay is a great walk to an amazing lighthouse….there are lots of seals in the area and the rain is minimal….after a detour to the penguin hide in Roaring Bay (no penguins to be seen), we head over to Cathedral Caves…..they are definitely worth the trek…..despite the weather, we have not been the only tourists out today so we take some comfort in that and hope for clearer skies ahead….hey, we have had a couple of days of rain and some of our Canadian friends have been dealing with ice storms…..tomorrow we will leave early and head up the coast to Kaikoura where the forecast is better…..

another private beach....connected to the camp site....pretty windy though....

can you see the sand blowing beside Cathy and Linda

how about now??

this little guy was clinging to this thistle in the high winds - even my camera didn't bother it.......

seal colony at Nugget Point......

the walk up to the Nugget Point lighthouse.....

check out the rocks.....rugged place.....

just past this point is Roaring Bay where the yellow eyed penguins nest.....

3 happy little maids - the wind here is about 70km/hr.....rugged ladies I'd say!

can you tell me how this seal got up on that rock??

3 little maids and the penguin hide (little building that you hide in to watch the penguins) behind them......

Cathedral Cave access point.....

Jess studies the rock formations.....she's been a rock fan for years......

I'm afraid Linda!!

inside the north access......the cave leads to a narrow turn.......

there is only one other way out.......

this is the cathedral side......

this is the other access - this is the cathedral part......

almost finished the 1km uphill hike back from the caves.....this is a little sample of the jungle foliage...even in the rain, such a remarkable place!!........
