NZ - TE ANAU TO THE CATLINS

the drive to the Catlins is rainy……we head to Bluff, the most southern community on the South Island (excluding the Stewart Islands)….Bluff is pretty quiet and the famous Bluff oysters are out of season….we tour a bit then head for Owaka….on the way there we stop at Curio Bay and learn about the plight of the yellow eyed penguins…..they have a lot of challenges surviving with so many predators….we head for camp and are pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful spot with a great beach (but no sun yet)…..we settle in and make plans for Nugget Bay and the Cathedral Caves tomorrow….rain or shine……

the town of Bluff from the lookout....

at the Bluff lookout we spotted this Kiwi national bird, the tui....they love flax nectar and have the most distinctive little white chest tufts....they change their song depending on the message they are sending....

Curio Bay is the home of 12 adolescent yellow eyed penguins....the survival expectancy is for 2 of them......pretty rough world.....

the bay floor is embedded with petrified wood estimated to be over 2 million years old....I know, it's like I had a twin!!

the road to Owaka ....a little resting spot...that's a hay feeder.....

this is the town of Bluff's harbour master's office of 150 years ago.....he wouldn't answer the door!!

I can hear the music but I don't see a coin slot for the pictures!!............
