NZ - GERALDINE TO WANAKA - Mount Cook

we get an early start and hit Tekapo at about 9:00 then head to Mount Cook National Park…..unbelievable beauty, colour, mountains - - all that stuff….we hike up a little to the base of Cook and within a half day hike of the base of the Mount Tasman Glacier…..this place is really hard to describe and hopefully the photos do it some justice but we are in a very special place…..the drive in and out is as spectacular as the park at the base of the glacier….the scenery today makes up for the bleak stuff that we dealt with over the last few days……we continue on to Wanaka……it’s warm again and Wanaka is a bustling and beautiful town and area……we grab some dinner at the local New World and set up camp….tomorrow we will hike up Mount Roy…….

Lake Tekapo provides us with our first indication of the sheer beauty of the area.....

purple flowers and dark golden brown and green fields carpet the Cook mountain range in the background......

Lake Pukaki with the alpine range in the background.....

early day enthusiasm for the promise of sunshine and spectacular scenery......

Tasman provides a great background for those honeymoon shots, don't you think?

Tasman up closer.....

the road into the Mount Cook camp - Aoraki.....

the Mackenzie Valley flood plain from Aoraki......

Mount Cook....this is the mountain that Sir Edmund Hilary trained on....Aoraki is now an international training location for major/extreme climbers.......

the monument to the many that have lost their lives on Mount Cook is sobering to say the least - there were over 20 names on the monument......

3 little maids with Mount Cook and Tasman in the background........

Pukaki with the sun in full view.......

again - smiling approvals......good day I'd say!!

we get back on the road and head for Wanaka.....more beautiful scenery......

and sunshine, flowers, all that stuff!!
