NZ - NEW YEARS DAY - DOLPHINS & MUSSELS

today is the dolphin swim but the weather is not looking too good….we head on down to the harbour to see what the tour operator's intentions are and the folks are getting into their wet suits so we join in……it’s an eco tour so it includes other points of interest…..we have great luck with hector dolphins which are very rare but we are not permitted to swim with this kind of dolphin…..we are, however, treated to some playfulness on the part of one of the hectors who enjoys swimming in the leading edge of the boat…this is a rare privilege which we truly appreciate…..we then spot a fur seal that decides to slip off his rocky bed and does barrel rolls in the water……we manage to see some yellow necked gannets and penguins…..but no swimmable dolphins are to be seen…..while our disappointment is undeniable, the experience, otherwise, is fantastic and the crew are heaps of fun to be with….they are knowledgable and friendly…despite the one missing element, we have no regrets and learn a little bit about the history and ecology of the area….we spend some time in Picton then make our way back to camp to change and head over to Havelock for mussels at The Mussel Pot restaurant….green shell mussels are harvested in this area and this is the best place to have them…..they are amazing!….but the overcast weather persists and we head back for a cold wet night - one visit from a possum and we head to bed….hope the sun shines tomorrow…

hectors courtesy of Ed Peters, Holland....thanks for the pictures Ed and thanks for offering this disappointed Canuck with a run down camera battery copies of your photos.....

I didn't know that mussels had eyes on their shells....you learn something new everyday....

first a glass of sauvignon blanc bottled specifically for the Mussel Pot.....very delicious!

this is the sampler - grilled, steamed, smoked and marinated green shell mussels......

this is the first mussel for Cathy and first NZ mussel since we arrived for all of us except me - I had some in Coromondel...

I think that the picture says it all - - I hope Cathy's burger is good........
